Case Study 1: Group Retirement Member Portal

Group Retirement Website Update

Pain Points

Pain Point 1:

Users can only view details for one product (plan) at a time on the website. Users must switch between multiple pages if they have more than 1 product/plan.

Pain Point 2:

Users found it cumbersome to view their account value. In particular, their total balance.

Pain Point 3:

Managing finances invokes higher emotional attachment. Users want to understand the content and feel in control of their finances.

Goals

  1. Clearly display plans, their values and rate of return in account overview.
  2. Highlight the total account balance.
  3. Enhance the experience around estimated retirement income.

Goal 1: Member Account Overview

Layout about your savings with the 1 year rate of return for all plans. Showing total balance, plan type, policy number, value of plan, 1 year rate of return in percent as well as a link to more details for that plan. As well as recommended for you links such as "investment information" and "view my statements".

Goal 2: Account Balance and Plans

  • To address the pain points:
  • Prominently display the account balance. Analytics showed that viewing the account balance was the number 1 task that users do.
  • Most users have 1-2 plans, so we displayed the plans with each balance. When there are more than 2 plans, then a card carousel is displayed.
  • Presenting investment activity such as rate of return so the use does not have to search for it.

The responsive layouts of the group retirement member "at a glance" view. Shows a mobile layout and a desktop layout.

Goal 3: Estimated Retirement Income

Providing users with guidance around their retirement savings. Showing the user if they are on track for saving enough for retirement.

A future phase was building more interaction for a retirement calculator. User feedback shows that people want to look at different scenarios: “if I save X amount for Y years, what will I have for my retirement income?”

Illustrations showing your retirement income at 65. There are 2 tabs that offer different views. One is "our estimate" an the other is "your goal".

How We Got Here

Through feedback from the customer contact support representatives, to user testing with wireframes and iterating the design. Creating a concept, receiving user feedback and updating the design accordingly was the best way to challenge our ideas and assumptions.

Various concepts for illustrating retirement income. From showing what it will probably be and what you want it to be vs what the current savings are. Also options to save more.
